Given that we aren't supposed to be doing people's homework for them on this site, if you do provide an answer for someone, how does the poster know that you are correct in your answer unless you provide how you arrived at the answer for them? The same thing works for the people who post homework questions on this site. They need to be providing what they think is the answer first and how they arrived at it. Then members of this site will help them to arrive at the correct answer by guiding them through the process.

The question was "what is the width of the walk way " the answer is 16.25 ft. The reason a person asks a question is their business, if some one wants to provide more information or a different answer please do so, not all answers listed are correct in any category and a person asking the question should compare answers and determine the answer that seems to be the most accurate. "Clough" did not answer this question, so he should not be using the "Answer this question" for his own forum on what question or answer is allowed.

True. The reason that a person asks a question is their business. But, the rules concerning people that ask questions that are more than likely about homework are clear. The question being about "algebra 2" was a dead giveaway.

I was simply trying to make it clear as to the way questions about homework and the answering of the same are to be done.

This site greatly encourages education about any subject. As such, if it is a homework question, in order to help in the education of someone, helping someone in their education would not be to simply to give them the answer to their question.

It was an answer to the question because my answer was geared around the promulgation of the policy about education concerning homework help for the person originally posting the question. They needed to know that so that if they ever post a question again, they will know how to do it according to the rules that have already been laid out.

If you let x = the width of the walkway and y= the length of the walkway, you know

the perimeter is 2x+2y=450... [1]

The area of the walkway is (x-60)(y-100)[/math]... [2]

Solve [1] for y and sub into [2].

You'll get a quadratic which you should be able to solve. Remember, the max lies at the vertex of the parabola.
