    What is this pipe for?
    Hello there,

I just bought a house from a bank (foreclosure). I found there are lots of things I don't know on the house. Here is one of them.

In the basement, there is a room I want to make it as a bath room. I found there is pipe entry which was blocked with concrete. I don't know what is for originally. I am wondering there was a toilet there before and that entry was the sewer entry? Can I use it as the drainpipe for my new toilet? Please look at the photos and help me figure it out. Thanks,

    James

It's possible that it's an old closet bend, which might connect directly to that same stack, but under the concrete.

That other plug thing nearby looks like it's the main cleanout, assuming this is the main stack in the house... Is it on city sewer?

I'm not a plumber, and so I haven't seen lots of weird stuff like this, but I would guess that if you want to use it, you'll have to jackhammer up that plugged pipe and replace it.

That's all hubbed cast iron you have there, and I personally would resist the temptation to add any PVC... CI is not that much harder to work with, and for the amount you'd need, the material costs would be pretty small.
