Common signs are cramping, irritability, mood swings, bloating, fatigue, painful breasts, headaches... just to name a few. I typically know when I am going to start when I am bloated and I start cramping...

Well, I'm guessing that this would be your first period? Correct me if I'm wrong. Although there's no way to tell what day you'll get your first period, there may be signs that it is coming. In general, girls get their first period about two years after their breasts start to grow. Also, many girls start having periods around the same age that their moms did, so you might want to ask your mom how old she was when she started. Here are some other changes you may notice around the time you get your first period: your hips getting wider, hair growing under your arms and around your nipples and vulva, developing acne, and thick and whitish or slippery and clear vaginal discharge. Some girls experience physical or emotional discomfort that is known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) about a week before menstruating, or during the first few days of menstruation. Symptoms of PMS include depression and other mood changes, tender breasts, appetite changes, irritability, headaches, backaches, insomnia, sweating, difficult breathing, and fluid retention. Hope this helps yah!

    Back to Girlssoftball's question.

It is generally know to occur once you reach approximately 100 pounds (45.45 kgs), why exactly is unknown.

Now, for your first period, you may not have any symptoms whatsoever other than the bleeding beginning. This is very common.

When I was a teen I had no warnings. Keep an eye on your calendar so you aren't caught off guard.

As I have gotten older the warning signs have gotten progressively stronger. Now when I feel like I could bite the head off a 10 penny nail, I know my period is starting the next day.

Yes, Em, my daughter started last year (she was 12) and continues to have no symptoms. Periods for the first year can be completely unpredictable.

Did you know, just a little FYI, that periods tend to come younger in girls who live in sunnier states such as Tennessee and Florida?
