He definitely needs his mind to be taken off this separation and thats exactly what it is 'separation anxiety'.
In our area we have the equivalent to a 'horse whisperer' only she visit homes where there are problem dogs, cats, goats, etc., you name it she talks to it. Surprisingly enough she gets results because she claims to solve say, an anxiety problem in a cat or dog, she talks to them and they communicate with her. She is does have a more then average success rate in figuring out 'why fido is pouting', etc. And there is the mexican guy in LA who sorts out only dogs and has a TV programme about it. He is really quite awesome.
I guess you are going to have to keep on shewing him away until he gets the idea that this is where he is supposed to be for the present time. Eventually he will. Good luck, cause i know just how pesistent and cats can be. They are the epitome of tunnel vision.
