I have used hydroquinine successfully. It lightens the spots to some degree. Now I learn of the toxicity of that product. What are other effective products?

The stalder/ V. Belo kojic acid products are good... but best when used with arbutin... currently shiseido offers a 5% arbutin product but it's expensive... a good alternative is to make your own arbutin product... you can buy arbutin powder online... 5-6 grams turn 4 oz of any lotion or cream into a 5% arbutin product... mix the powder with a bit of hand sanitizer to break down any clumps... and add to a fast absorbing lotion or cream... like lubriderm...
