I had the 1 hp blower motor on my furnace/air conditioner replaced in December 2005. In the last 2 days, it has gotten extremely loud. It still works, but it sounds like there's an airplane in my basement. Any ideas about what could be going wrong? Is it something that can be fixed or will I need another new motor? The motor came with a 1-year warranty that expired last December. Is that the normal length for a blower motor warranty? I don't want to replace a $500 motor every 18 months!

If you replace motor yourself, not difficult to do, you can do it for much less. If the motor itself is noisey, the bearings are bad. You may try oiling at oil port and may buy you a little more time. You may check and make sure the fan has not losened on shaft and is rubbing. Most motors last a very long time. I did get a hold of one in April than went out in May. It did last only 30 days. If you do replace motor, be sure and replace capacitor with the reating on motor at the same time. Good Luck

Thanks, Ill see if I can find the oil port -- didn't know there was one -- and also check for a loose fan. The noise could be coming from the fan rubbing or rattling rather than the motor itself. How is fan usually attached to shaft? Could it be something as simple as a loose/missing screw?

It will side on the motor shaft. It does have a flat area that will match with flat area on shaft. Then there is a screw to tighten that locks it into place. To oil you will more than likely have to remove it from air handler. Good Luck
