Are you asking about mesial drift and shift?

Mesial drift is physiological and happens when the deciduous second molars are lost prematurely--- then the first perm molar drifts mesially.. causing problems with occlusion because it takes up the premolar space.

Mesial shifting -- I'm not very sure -- but I think it's when the teeth drift mesially when there are large primate spaces available.. again required if the spaces are large, for if the shifting doesn't occur then malocclusion might result.

So drift is after premature loss of dec. molar and shifting when there is already space available..

Let me know if this is right.
