I have an older model Fedders A/C unit in my window. When I turn it on the compressor turns on but no fan. If I give the fan a push the fan starts and stays on for about 30min or so. Then the fan stops blowing. I turn the whole unit off. If I wait a couple of hours then I can turn it back on and it works OK. Execpt I still have to start the fan by hand. What could be wrong? The fan turns freely when I start it (it doesn't feel stiff) so I don't think the motor's bad. Please help!! It's too hot for me!

You ave a dual capictor in it that starts the fan and compressor. It is bad and needs to be replaced. It also sound like the motor is going bad as it is shutting down after several minutes. It is getting hot and going off on its overload and when it cools down will resart. Good luck

Could there be anything else that would be causing the fan motor to stop? i.e. dirt etc. Do I HAVE to replace the capacitor? Or could I just deal with starting it by hand all the time.

Replace the capacitor. Cheap repair and you can do yourself. Yes, you should keep all equipment clean to operate properly. Dirty fan adds weight and makes it harder to start up but you do need to replace the capicator. Good Luck.

I noticed just now when I tried to start it again that the fan starts to move about 1/4" or so... stops... then if I give it a push it goes. I'm going to try to take it apart and see what's up. Maybe there is something keeping it from moving... maybe that's why it's overheating and turning off... I'll let you know. Thanks for the advise.

You can try oiling the motor while you have access to it. My experience tells me you'll be replacing it though. Post back with results,please

There wasn't anything blocking or restricting the fan (ie dust etc.) There must be something causing the motor to overheat, because you can almost hear something in the motor when it gets too hot and turns off. I'm just going to buy a new ac unit. The new motor is over $100 and the capacitor is about $50. Thanks for the advise though. I really appreciate it.

Yes, cost of repairing these units make it cheaper to replace. Once the warranty runs out,unless it's something minor best to replace. Good Luck and come back to this forum again when you need help. Many good folks here willing to give good advice
