 Can someone explain what a female dogs cycle is? Mine hasn't had this yet...
TalkToTheVet's info-Dogs Heat Cycle This seems to be an easy to understand article. You said your dog was having behavior issues. Please consider spaying her for this reason alone. This trait could possibly be given to her puppies. Also dogs that are not spayed can develop breast cancer, ovarian cancer and get serious uterine infections.ASPCA: Adopt: Spay/Neuter here is a very informative article on why you should spay your dog. Just imagine the physical pain for the dog and the mental anguish of seeing your pet suffer. Not to mention the expense of trying to save your pet.
Female dogs go through a reproductive cycle about twice a year. It is not the same as humans. It starts with the swelling of their vulva, then a bloody discharge tapering of after a week. At that time, they are fertile and become receptive to males. After the fertile period ends, the swelling slowly goes down. They are no longer fertile or receptive to males.
The most important thing for pet owners to know is that if they have their females spayed by 6 months, they never face the mess, hassle, and risks of a female coming into heat.
