First, let me say that I do not want to start an indoor/outdoor debate. Second, I want to say that I have no affiliation to any company I am going to mention. The following is simply my personal experience, which I am passing along for other people who have indoor/outdoor cats.
I have a cat that is only really happy if she can go outside. However, since she went walkabout for a month, I have taken steps to cat-proof my fence so that she has to stay in her yard. When I was in California, I used Cat Fence-In (http://www.catfencein.com/). Now that I am in Austin, I decided to try Affordable Cat Fence (http://www.catfence.com/). Of the two, I have to say that I prefer Affordable. It seems to be a sturdier product, and is really rather easy to put up. It would be easier with a helper, but even with just one person it's not hard, just sometimes awkward. I'm not quite through with the "attaching the net to the fence" part, but that should be done soon.
Of course, these systems are not perfect. I've seen the cat fence-in turn my cat back when she tried getting a squirrel that was sitting on the fence on the other side of it. I've also seen my Rana-cat (who is very small, very slender, and very agile and athletic) try to get through every gap that she can find, and manage to work her way through some spots you would swear she couldn't fit through. But she did finally seem to give up once I managed to block those off. And it decreases the number of spots that you have to worry about.
I hope that this information is helpful for other people who want to let their cat outside, but don't want them to be free-roaming.
