    Using calculus to find area
I need to find the area of a golf green. I have a diagram with no dimensions and no equation for the curve of the line.

I know I am supposed to use integration in some way to find the area but I am stuck.

The diagram represents the plan of a golf green drawn to the scale 1cm = 5m. Find the area of the green.

    Digagram attached.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

About the simplest way is scale the length, then break it up into rectangles of equal width and calculate the sum of their areas and, therefore, the area of the green.

Just for an example, say it's 500 m long. The more rectangles the more accurate the area, so break it up into, say, 25 of them. They'd be 500/25=20 m wide each. Then scale the height of each and sum up their areas. That should be close enough.

There are other ways if you want to get fancy-schmancy.

    Non-calculus methods:

1: determine the weight of the paper per unit area
2: cut out the area in question and weigh it
3: divide the weight by the weight per unit area

1: get the drawing into a computer readable format
2: determine pixels per unit area
    3: count pixels
4: divide pixels by pixels per unit area

1: determine the water absorbing capacity of the paper per unit area
2: cut out and expose the area to a known volume of water
3: measure the volume of water that is left when the area is removed
4: divide the difference between the original water and the final water by the absorbing capacity per unit area
