Hello, I'm a little confused with my culture. My mum is half white (british) and half Brazilian. My dad is half black caribbean, quarter white and quarter asian. However I am a little confused about what race I am and usually when I have to fill in ethnic questions I am puzzled what to put. Also I don't know what culture to follow because my mum wants me to follow a british way of life, however my dad and dads parents pester me about adapting to the asian (Muslim) way of life. The thing is I don't seem to fit into the Muslim way and don't understand the language. But I seem upset because I don't want to seem that I am favouring one culture more than the other. If you read my problem please comment because I would like as many answers as possible. Do you think I should just adapt to british culture after all I do live in Britain.:confused:

I'm multi-racial also. When I answer questions about my ethnicity, I put other or if I can I just ignore it, sometimes just to make me laugh I alternate which ones I choose. And if you feel more comfortable with the british culture than adapt to it, if you still can't decide then maybe you should learn more about each and choose which one fits you.

Well, first of all, I can only imagine how confused you are. On the other hand, and I know it's not quite the same, but my parents were born in Canada, my grandparents were born in Scotland, Wales and England. If someone asks me I usually just answer Canadian. I don't think in this day and age we should be asked as to what our ethnicity is, so if I was asked what race I was, I would probably answer human. :) I really do think the answer would depend upon where you were born... but you could put mixed, I guess.

As for what culture to follow... I think that what makes the world as wonderful as it is mainly is because we don't have to follow one culture. Take from each one the parts you like best. Obviously, the more you adapt to the area in which you live, the easier life can be, but there is no reason to commit to any ONE culture! Goodness, I know people who draw from all facets of life. It's okay to be different, and it's more than okay to be an individual. Just be yourself!

Hi there I am muti racial also irish scottish maori italian british.. the list goes on.. what I've noticed is that other people will treat you by the way you look I am a very pale maori yet a very dark irish so as far as culture goes for me.. simple.. I have my own, its made up of little bits of all that fit nicely together as do I, funny thing Ive found if you research and study all the cultures you'll find they all have one single common thread, their all yours

With the ethnic questions why not just say your Britain.

I have way different backgrounds myself and if anybody asks or any kind of ethnic questions. I am from Canada, and Canadian. So all I state is I am Canadian.

Hope this helps some. I do understand you have two different cultures that are pulling you in different directions. There is no reason why there can not be a blend of the two. Meaning maybe there are things that you admire about your fathers side. Work on the strenghs of each culture. It never has to be just one or the other.

There is also a british muslim type of culture, if you want a compromise. Not knowing much about it it looks different - like the muslim culture values etc of traditional islamic countries with fashion and style of british culture. Calvin Klein hijabs - always liked them!

You can always change to suit where you are as well. Visiting your dads family adopt their cultural ways, visiting your mother's her families. Become a culture chameleon.

And as for the forms- always thought they were a bit nosey myself I usually make something up, even though I have no cause to. My brother always writes traveller of irish heritage even though strictly speaking it's a total lie. Did you know that whatever you right down people have to accept? No matter how much you made it up!

Just do whatever you feel comfortable with and whatever you identify with most. Trying to force yourself to act a certain way will only make you miserable.

Lets get things straight... first you are a human being and we cannot be divided in race/colur or creed as all of us descends from the same man Adam.

Another thing about muslim/Islam is that it does not have racial boundaries.
One can be an American and a muslim or African and a muslim.
You can learn the religion in English, lots of translations of the Quran and Hadith on the net and books available too.
Another thing is you cannot be forced into Islam, you have to read/learn and understand and then believe.
As a muslim you can be brazilian,british,asian,caribean muslim as long as you follow the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
