Last summer my York AC began making a "screeching/screaming" type noise. It would do this intermittantly. It seemed to be coming from the fan motor. A repairman recharged the system by adding freon as he found the system needed it. The system then ran good and without the noise. Last week the noise came back and again the system was recharged and again the noise went away. The repairman and myself agreed that recharging the system shouldn't make the noise go away as the noise seems to come from the fan motor. Yet the noise does go away. He inspected the fan motor and said it seemed okay. How come the noise goes away when the system is recharged but comes back as the system gets low on freon? Could the noise be from the compressor but somehow sounding like it's coming from the fan motor? And what would the noise have to do with the system being low on freon?

There could be many reasons for the noise but how can we tell if the service man you just had there cannot tell you where the problem comes from.

First. You should not have to add refrigerant (FREON is a Dupont trade name only) every year. Tell the repairman to be a good repairman and fix the leak. This will save you from the yearly trip and the bill that comes with it.

Usually if a fan motor is making a noise it does not stop on its own. The fan noise also has absolutely nothing to do with the compressor. They are two separate items.

It is always possible that the compressor lacking the proper refrigerant charge in the system could be making the noise. Most of the time the noise if from being overcharged but I have heard them whistle when they were low on refrigerant. This is another reason to get your unit repaired properly to stop the leak. Fix the leak the noise goes away or just keep putting refrigerant in every to keep the noise away your choice.
