I got a theft by check charge about a year ago, but it was dismissed. Will this prevent me from passing a background check from an employer?

If you don't have a record, then it won't show up on a background check.

What is the charge was theft by taking and it was expunged? Should I answer yes to being convicted of a felony, and can I prevent the clerk's office from giving that info out to a 3rd party?
