One of my daughters is experiencing some strange behavior when trying to use her hair dryer. When we first moved into this house a little over a year ago, her dryer worked just fine in her bathroom downstairs. Then, it wouldn't work in her bathroom, but it would work in her bedroom. Now, it doesn't seem to work anywhere but the kitchen. It isn't tripping the GFI or the circuit breaker and the outlets will power everything else, just not that appliance. The dryer is 1800 watts and has it's own circuit breaker in the plug-in. Does anybody have any ideas on this?

I think it's the hairdryer? 1800 watts is a lot for a hair dryer. Sometimes when it doesn't work it can mean its burnt out. Mainly if you used it a lot. But That would be weird because I have hair dryers for a year ago that work fine but be careful with it, when mine stopped working next time I plugged it it blew up and went into a mini fire :P. Try to call the company who made it and see what's going on. I just gave you my best guess but I can be wrong... I probably am xD haha.

Yeah, it makes sense that it would be the dryer itself, but what doesn't make sense is that it works in one outlet but won't work in others that it used to work in... I'm guessing it's in the protection circuit of the dryer. Just weird.

Haha yea that is weird. Oh I think I know why. Some ares in the house use different electricity lines so maybe where there is most electricity it has trouble running?

There may be a break in the cord or the prongs of the plug are worn due to the normal everyday handling of the appliance.

I suggest that if there is any question about the reliability of a hair dryer that it be discarded and purchase a new one. Do not attempt to make any repairs to an appliance such as this.

Well, that's what I thought at first, but the fact that it used to work in those other outlets but now doesn't is what is bugging me.

I think you're right and I see a replacement in the very near future. Thing is, it works great in the kitchen and won't even try to work in the other outlets where it used to work fine. I'm not going to attempt to service the thing, especially since a new one is less than $20. I was just curious as to what might cause this anomaly.

Ahh OK, if the unit works in one outlet but not others, which I did not pay attention to, then the kitchen outlet may be newer or not as worn as the others, so may be a combination of worn receptacles and plug prongs.
