... both have the same encoder design and the encoder switches are thrown in the same position. Open the remotes and see if the switches look the same. If so, leave the original alone and set the spare encoder switches in the same position as the original and give it a whirl.

I am going to try the same thing. I will have one at the top and the other at the bottom of the stairs for light control. I would think by having the same code in the both remotes would do the trick. I don't think you can hurt anything by trying. Hope this helps.
