    Are these symptoms?
My last period started on May 20th and I haven't had a period since. My husband and I were going to try start trying to conceive in July. We did start a little early as we had unprotected sex on June 18th. We did not think anything could come of that since it was so close to what should have been the start of my period. I am now about 2 weeks late for my period. I have noticed vaginal swelling... not sure what's up with that... I don't remember that when I had my son, and the last couple of days I have had light brown discharge when I wipe. I have tried a couple of pregnancy tests in the morning, all have come out negative. Are these pregnancy symptoms? I am unsure as well how long after conception to use a pregnancy test. They all relate to missed periods and when I had sex I was already close to the day I should have started. Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Women can ovulate at different times in their cycles, so anytime that you have unprotected sex then you are taking a chance of conceiving. Brownish discharge usually symbolizes "old blood" which can come during your period. It can also come at other times... even when your pregnant. Sometimes a little spotting can signify implantation, or sadly even a miscarriage. If you just had unprotected sex on June 20th then a home pregnancy test probably wouldn't detec hCG levels this early. A lot od Dr.'s say that you can have a blood test done as early as 1 week after conceptiong, and they can be more accurate than a HPT.. with the exception of lab error and hCG levels. If you want to take a urine test Iwould advise waiting until 14-17 dpo before testing. That's usually enough time. But... some women's horomone's vary. My last period was May 18th, and I am 12 days late, so 2 more days I will be testing. Good luck to you!

Since you said you started having unprotected sex on June 20th, you obviously were using some form of birth control. However, depending on which kind, it can play a role in this. For example, if you were using the pill, etc, compared to if you were using only a condom. If you were on the pill or something, that could explain why your period is late. However, there are many reasons a woman's period could be late. Getting sick, stress, hoping for pregnancy/or dreading it, etc. its also not uncommon to be late, or even completely miss a cycle now and then. I was once 2 1/2 months late, thought I was pregnant, but it turned out to be for no reason at all, I went to the doc, checked out healthy, and started right back up like normal with my next period. I would suggest that you wait until you expect your next period to arrive. If it doesn't arrive, I suggest you get a qualatative blood test done and/or see your doctor. This blood test is more accurate then an hpt. However, it only give a negative or positive readout, so if your hcg levels still aren't high enough, you will get a negative, even if you might be pregnant. If you go to your doctor they can do an exam that will look for other determining signs of pregnancy, such as an enlarged uterus, and the blueish/purple tinting to the vaginal/cervical area that accompanies pregnancy due to increased blood volume. If there is still question, the doctors next step would be to order a quantative blood test. This measures the exact amount of hcg in your system. The test will be repeated within a few days to see if the numbers are doubling as they should in a normal pregnancy. At that point an ultra sound might be done to see that everything is healthy.

I have not been on birth control at all. My husband would use protection. My body does not deal well with birth control and therefore I have not used birth control for about 12 years.

OK. Well, that rules that out. :0) also, the swelling could just be from rough sex, or perhaps something else such as infection, etc. However, in pregnancy, there is swelling from increased blood volume, so that is also a possibility.
