I have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan that is operated completely by remote control. It has not pull strings. It was working fine for the past year, and all of a sudden I noticed it only works to push the air up, and not down. The light works. Put new batteries in the remote control. It still only spins one way. Any suggestions?

Where is the reverse switch?

There is a button on the remote control that says "FOR/REV". When pressed, the arrow changes on the screen, but the fan doesn't respond. It only goes in the reverse direction.

Try turning off breaker to fan for couple of minutes.

You can try that. You can also try pushing the fan blades the other direction. However, most likely, something is wrong with the receiver.

Here is how I fixed my problem.

Changing direction of the fan without using remote control.

First turned off power. I then changed the polarity on the fan (changed to black to white and white to black). Then after I turned the power on, I pushed the fan in the proper direction I wanted it to go -- then clicked low on my wall speed control. And it's working.

There was no way that receiver was going to fit with all those wires up in the cap -- so decided not to use the remote -- and that's when the polarity thing came in to play.

Changing the polarity shouldn't have had anything to do with it. You should change it back.

And the receiver would have fit, in some fans it's tricky.

CeilingFan nailed it, reversing black and white will have no effect.
However, I have heard, but not tried is, spinning fan in opposite direction and apply power to change direction.
When you spun blades backwards, it would have done it black to black, and white to white also.
It needs to be black to black and white to white, don't worry, it will still spinn your desired direction.

It's possible that reversing the polarity had some effect on tricking the relay, but unlikely.

My ceiling fan stopped working in the forward direction. When I switch over the button to spin it in the reverse direction - it works? So I assume that the motor is fine. I suspect that there may be a gear (plastic) that may have worn down... What do you think is the issue here?
