    Existing shower drain removal
I am remodeling my master bath and have taken everything down to the studs. The bathroom currently had a tile shower and I am planning on redoing it. I bought my PVC pan liner and was looking at the drain that is in the documentation and realized that the current drain is different. When I pulled the cement mortar up in the existing shower it looks like a standard drain but with some differences. First I see no screws on what appears to be the locking ring. The adjustable part of the drain appears to fit inside the pipe. My question is, am I going to have to cut this old drain off and if so can I use PVC and a boot to attach new pipe to the drain pipe (which appears to be cast iron) to extend the pipe high enough to install a new drain? Or is there an easier way to handle this?

First off let's get together on terms when you say "pan liner" Is this a plastic shower pan that will be mortared and tiled or a manufactured shower base?
If the existing raiser is cast iron then the flange type shower drain is joined with a lead and oakum joint If you're replacing with another tile shower you needent remove it. It depends upon what you're installing as to what type drain you will use and since you've failed to inform us of exactly is going in I will wait until I have more details before I continue. A picture of the new drain would be nice. Regards, Tom

It's a plastic shower pan membrane that will be mortared and tiled.

The way I see it, you have a cast iron drain and trap raiser that has to be removed and a PVC Raiser and a PVC flange type shower drain,(see image) installed.
Is there any chance you could cut the cast iron raiser and using a Fernco Shielded Coupling, (see image) to convert the raiser to PVC? Do you need instructions on how to remove a lead and oakum joint? Good luck, Tom

Yes I think I can cut it. I looked at it again last night and think that's what I need to do.

Instructions on how to remove a lead and oakum joing would be great.

    Thanks for your replies.

To remove a poured lead and oakum joint take a 3/8" drill bit and drill a few holes down past the lead and into the oakum.. Push a screwdriver under the lead ring and lever it up. Once it's free you can began to peel the lead ring out. Now pick out the oakum and you can pull the joint apart. Good luck, Tom
