    Am I obligated to return a deposit w/o a 30day notice?
I live in California. I had a friend move out with out notice. She did pay for the previous month rent. However, she moved out the day before the 1st of the month with out notice leaving me to pay full rent. I know there is a 30 day notice law in Ca. But we have no written contract (everything was verbal) Does that obligate me to return her deposit? She does owe a little for bills and she also neglected to leave the key and I am debating whether I should have the locks changed.

If she did not complete the rental term, I would say no. You should always put these things in writing to avoid conflicts in the future. I had a friend move out before the end of her term in an apartment complex. Because we were both on the lease, the complex manager only made me pay my half and went after her (with a collection agency) for her half.

    Hello K:

It's not as simple as all that. You didn't say if she owed you rent. As a matter of fact, there's a lot that you didn't say. Please fill in the details for us if you want a good answer.
