    Laws about use of music
Hi, I am a part of a local community gospel choir that's going to do a live concert and we will be singing music that's already been recorded by other gospel choirs. While we will be doing some original music as well, will we get in trouble with the pre recorded music? How does the free use of music laws apply here?

    Hello N:

You can sing anything you want. You can't make money, however, from singing somebody else's songs, unless they give you permission.

PS> (edited) That doesn't mean that it isn't done a jillion times a day... I'm just giving you the law on the matter. Will you get in trouble if you use it?? I don't think there are going to be any music cops at your concert.

However, even though I never expected it, an ASCAP representative DID show up at a restaurant I owned and demanded royalties on the music I was playing... Go figure...
