My friend was caught stealing from the store he was working in.Amount was about $200-$250.Cops were called and he was charged with theft under 5000.Today when he caled the store owner ,He is ready for out of court settlement.We are new to the country and don't know much . Please help.

You can settle your civil problems with him, but he doesn't speak for the cops. They can proceed with criminal charges.

Your friend as two issues, first will be to pay back the store, and depending on your area you live, an amount that they will require for their time and trouble.

Your second issue will be the criminal charges, if you are settled with the store, your criminal may go better. But you will still have to appear for the criminal case, pay fines and the such.
