    New PC Doesn't Start!
    Hello,

I recently purchased a brand new amd PC. My PC has an amd athlon 64 X2 dual core processor, an asus m2npv-mx motherboard 1 gb ram & a 250 gb hddisk & a viewsonic lcd.

To start with, when we first bought the PC home (after checking the bios at the dealer’s shop), the PC just wouldn’t start at all. The cpu would come on for a few seconds & the monitor would display the message “no signal” and turn off & then the cpu too would hang or conk off.

We took the PC back to dealer & explained what was happening. The first time he connected it, it started again properly and displayed the bios (which didn’t even happen at my place). We asked him to restart it a couple of times & the PC hung and wouldn’t start after that. Since the dealer isn’t an engineer he couldn’t diagnose the problem but suggested that he dismantle the entire cpu and put it back together piece by piece with isolated parts to find the trouble giving part.

Strangely enough everything worked fine. He said that maybe the cpu was shutting off because he had made a parallel connection for the hard disk & motherboard and so the hard disk was not getting enough power. (I don’t know whether that’s a load of or if he’s telling the truth!). So he made two separate direct connections from the power supply or ‘smps’. After doing that, the PC was assembled once again and we rebooted at least 10 times to make sure it wasn’t hanging – it seemed perfect.

After we bought the PC home, we started the PC – which started just fine. We went into the bios, changed the boot sequence since we were installing windows xp from a cd. To cut an already long story short, we installed xp but occasionally the setup would hang & strangely enough the “F8” key on my keyboard would respond – but it eventually worked. We spent the entire day installing all the drivers & rebooted several times. During the entire session we never shut down the PC even once – we only had to reboot.

After we had finished everything the function keys on my keyboard wouldn’t respond but we ignored it. We were done for the day & we shut it down.

    Here’s where the fun starts….

After about an hour I decided to start the PC. When I first started it, the Microsoft windows xp loading screen appeared & within a few seconds the screen began to flicker from a dull grey screen to the black screen – and displayed “no signal” and turned off. I put the cpu off immediately.

I turned on the PC again – but this time the monitor wouldn’t come on at all – the cpu’s green & amber lights would flicker but the monitor would display “no signal” and shut down & the cpu would shut down too. The motherboard didn’t make a single beeping sound.

Strangely enough, after 15 minutes I decided to try again. This time the cpu made its usual single beep sound and reached the windows xp loading screen but hung again - and this time the entire xp logo was distorted – then the monitor displayed ‘n/s’ & both monitor & cpu shut off.

I have connected the monitor to my friend’s PC and worked on it for close to 4 hours – so we ruled out any problems with the monitor. We connected my cpu to his monitor & his monitor displayed the infamous “no signal”!

I have realised that the PC starts only till the loading screen (after which it hangs) only after the entire PC is off for about 15 - 20 minutes. During that interval the monitor wouldn't come on at all and the cpu would hang.

Does ANYONE know what on earth is going on?? Is there a motherboard problem or a power supply problem?? We’ve checked the ram.

    Please help!

    Cheers

    Vick

I had a computer that was working but
Displayed an error message every so often...
Then it crashed and would start and initiate boot process,
Then die and display NO SIGNAL
It is an XP system, hope we find out what the answer is...

If the PC is brand new and you bought it from a dealer, why don't you take it back for a new machine because the problem you are facing can relate to a lot of things.

It sounds like a power supply problem to me. Ask your dealer to install another power supply. The power supply can be considered the most important component, so don't go cheap. Get a high-quality high wattage unit, such as Enermax, OCZ, Antec, etc.

If you bought bad ram that could also be a problem. Often ram that is purchased as new isn't and retailers will keep selling the ram to people until someone doesn't return it. We did this all the time back when I worked for B*st B*y.

Good point. Depending on how *respectable* the dealer is, the parts you get may be used / refurbished... Still though, don't cheap out on the power supply. :)

I agree with HVAC888 about the power supply. I had the same problem on a desktop computer. Sometimes it would start OK, run for a while, and stop. Sometimes it wouldn't even start. Sometimes it just hung up. Replacing the power supply corrected the problem.
