Need ideas car will not start

Have you checked the easy stuff first? Battery, is it in park, does it have gas in it, etc? I had a Cavalier, a '91 I think, and sometimes it wouldn't start. It had electric power, but nothing would happen when I turned the key. The starter was loose, so I would just open the hood and tap it with a wrench or something and it would start.

What exactly happens when you try to start it?
