    Stinky drain in basement
Hi there, a little new at this... here goes
How would you cover a hole in a cement basement floor where the washing machine and laundry tub drain into? I assume that there is a pipe that carries the water to an underground sewer pipe. The problem is, you can see the water sitting in the hole (there is about 2 inches between the end of the pipe, where it pours out and the hole) and it make the entire basement stink! We would need access to it in case of a clog but it needs to be sealed so the smell cannot leak out.
    Any suggestions??

The water you see is in the trap and that makes the seal. Setting for a length of time can turn the water rancid. Pour 1/2 gallon of full strength bleach down the drain and let it set overnight. Next morning flush it out with a few large pans of boiling water. You should have a sweet smelling drain. If you wish to seal it off you can jam a soft rubber ball in the drain hole.
    Good luck, Tom
