92 Explorer Low Torque Fwd and Rvse
I just completed a transmission and engine overhaul on a 92 Ford Explorer. Problem is the transmission seems to be lacking torque in both forward and reverse. The transmission will shift into both but you have to rev the engine to get the truck to move and it will not even roll over a 2X4. I have checked the transmission pressure and it is around 80 psi. I also went through the trouble shooting guide and air pressure checked the clutches and band engagements. All seem OK and moved per the guide. Band adjustments are per spec. The low and reverse solenoid moves and has good o-rings, no cuts and not quad rings.

I'm down to just a few questions. One, I put the check valves in the transmission valve housing with the valves facing up to the sheet metal plate, spring down. Did I put these two check valves in backwards? They look like they should seat against the gasket and not down in the valve housing but I have no picture to confirm.

The other option is that it's the torque converter. Is there any check I can perform to confirm that this is the problem? My Ford tech manual is no help in this area.

On transmissions that I have seen, the torque converter check valve goes in the housing first, with the torque converter check valve spring on top. The same thing applies to the cooler check valve and cooler check valve spring.
