To lose weight safely and have a loss that will last, it takes a healthy choice in foods and a steady weight loss of not more than 3 pounds per week. Food choices are whole grain products, instead of white flour, breads, cereals, rice, pasta. But remember serving sizes are so important when your looking to lose weight, a serving of bread is: 1 slice, 1/2 cup rice, cereal or pasta. So this might take some getting use to in the beginning but your body will adjust. Next you need 2-3 serving of dairy every day and this includes low fat or skim milk, (1 cup), low fat yogurt, sprinkle this with wheat germ, milled flax seed, or fruits. 1 1/2 oz of skim or partially skimmed cheese, like string, or low fat block cheese. Veggies you need to eat 3-5 serving a day and the one serving size is 1/2 cup of leafy veggies, 1/2 cup cooked or raw and 3/4 cup veggie juice. Eat -4 serving of fruits, medium sized. Beans, lean meat, fish, only 2-3 oz serving per meal. Try and eat protein with every meal. Nuts and seeds but only a handful will give you added protein and help you avoid cravings. With meats try and eat skinless chicken, turkey breast, loin type meats and fish.
Now the things you need to cut out are high sugar products like cakes, cookies, presweetened drinks, high sodium products like chips, fries, Cut out fast foods, fried foods, Drink lots of water as much as you can, instead of soda, for instance and if you like fruit drinks, make sure they are 100% of fruit juice. Exercise-- the other half of weight loss and equally as important as healthy choices and portion control, you need to work out 4-5 times a week, for 30-60 minutes, use aerobics, resistance training, running, walking, jogging, biking even swimming. But you need to work every area of your body so you can boost your metabolism. Walk and then work up to walking a mile for starters it will work wonders!
That's a really good answer. But what it does not address is self control, habits, and getting into this type of diet. When I was in high school, I weighted 256 and was 5 11. What got me on the right track was my mental state. The info above is really good, but if you're not motivated, you'll have no success. What did it for me was that I found something that I wanted more than food, more than being on the couch, more than anything. Everyday When I woke up, I thought about it and it guided my actions (in terms of healthy eating, going to the gym when I didn't want to, etc.) I happened to change the music I listened to and my outlook on a lot of things (I'm not saying you have to get that serious about it).
One of the best quotes I've ever heard: "Continue doing what you've always done, and you'll get what you've always gotten."
