    Smell of feces in house
There is a distinct smell of feces in certain parts of my house. It is most pronounced in the mud room but also in a cabinet in the kitchen that is on the other side of the wall from the bathroom. There is only a crawlspace under these two areas. I don't think there are any sewer pipes under the mudroom, since both bathrooms are in the other, eastern end of the house. The septic system is also at the eastern end.

If it is relevant, we have seen a lot of chipmunk activity around the house this spring and also heard some small animal (chipmunk?) running around in the attic. In past summers I have heard this same sort of noise in the walls.

I would automatically suspect that the septic system was backing up or needed cleaning, but -- as I said -- most of the smell is coming from an area in which I doubt there are any sewage pipes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Heard sound in wall of friends house. I removed switch plate, Could see bit of fir.
Cat had kittens in their attic. 1 had fallen down between walls, carefully cut drywall
With Chainsaw(just kidding) wall board saw, removed kitten unharmed. If not found,
Could have created a smell. Chipmunks?

I suspect you have a dead chipmunk in the crawlspace or walls somewhere - the smell is similar to sewer smells.

If possible, try to search around in the crawlsapce... or wait a month or so and the smell will stop.

We had a dead rat in our walls... finally found it and got it out during our most recent renovation. Don't tell my wife.
