Is my 2 year old verbally gifted?
My daughter is 28 months old. She had a vocabulary of over 200 words by 18 months and was speaking in 10+ word sentences before 2 years. She knows concepts such as; before and after, first, tomorrow, sharing and many others that we, and those she meets constantly find astounding. She has sympathy for peers and will let me know if her baby sister is crying because "Mommy, Madison feels sad. I'll help her feel better." or, "You have an ouchie? You need to get a bandaid?" She can count to 8 but tends to skip 5 and loves to count her way up the stairs. She knows many colors including, red, green, blue, purple, orange, pink, yellow, brown, black, and peach and can differentiate between light and dark colors. She knows a few spanish words from watching Dora and understands that they have different names in English. For example she asked me for a "roho" crayon the other day and when I didn't understand her she said "It's red." She knows hundreds of different animal names and amazed her aunt by describing a flamingo to her that she saw in a picture. She knows most of her basic shapes including a circle, oval, square, star, moon, and octagon. She tends to confuse a hexagon for an octagon. She can follow complicated multi-part instructions without needing it repeated such as "Put your potty seat back and flush the toilet then we are going to brush your teeth." She understands processes and what order things need to be done " First I have to get my shoes, then I can go to grandma's house." She is constantly asking why. "Mommy, why I have to wear my seatbelt?"

My question is, do I have a gifted child or she just just a little more advanced than the children around her that are her age?

She sounds very lively and curious which is part of life especially at that age. I have to say I think she is advanced greatly for her age. But you need to continue socialising her and once she attend school you will find out if she is gifted

Children that age are like little sponges, soaking up every piece of information they hear and see. Is she gifted? Maybe. My sons had decoded words and were reading at that age, along with most of the things your daughter does, and I never considered them gifted.

If I were you, I would just enjoy her while she is small, read to her, tell stories with her, get her imagination working in all sorts of way, do jigsaw puzzles with her, have her create things with Playdoh, play the Memory Game with her, have her help you print out your grocery list and take her shopping with you, go to the library with her where you will find books on parenting and games to play with a toddler.

Be sure she spends time with other children her age or older, so that she gains social skills. Can she be quiet? Can she entertain herself without your prompting her?

I am not sure if she is verbally gifted but it sounds like she will definitely get into public speaking and be very talkative when she is older. I know I was talking a lot when I was little like your daughter and now I am very outgoing and talkative.
