    Math story problem answers
210 people went swimming at the local pool. Thirty people spent time in the shallow and deep ends of the pool. The lifeguard said that twice as many people swam in the deep end as in the shallow end of the pool. How many people swam in the deep end of the pool and how many people swam in the shallow part of the pool only?

    Answer-deep end-_______, shallow end-________

    Explain how you got your answer.___________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________

let s = number of people who swam in the shallow end only
let d = number of people who swam in the deep end only

since 30 swam in both deep and shallow ends then we eliminate them from the total.
so 210 - 30 = 180 (total of people who either swam in shallow end only or deep end only)

    and it was given that d = 2 * s

    2 * s + s = 180
    3 * s = 180 then s = 60. And d = 120

newland2010, your comprehension was wrong! 30 swam in deep and shallow ends (BOTH). The question clearly asks for the number of people who swam in deep end ONLY and shallow end ONLY. my answer was very detailed!
