Sometimes the gums can have a dark pigment to them. If your gums are not healthy you will find that they are red, swollen and bleed when you brush and floss.

To piggyback on what Flossie said, some people just naturally have darker gums. First thing you should do is schedule a dental check-up to have a professional cleaning and evaluation. It's important to brush and floss daily to maintain dental health and you'll even notice that your gums not only look but feel better once you develop a good dental hygiene routine.

Have you had any trauma or accidents? Sometimes after an accident, the gums may permanently darken. Do you smoke? Also some people's gums darken as they age. What did your dentist say?

Stop smoking if you do eat healthy and brush and floss your teeth everyday.

Try seeing a peridontist for an evaluation and peridontal cleaning. They are the best person to talk to.

Just like teeth discolor with certain antibiotics, there may be a reason for your gum pigment changing. I don't know what that might be.

It's important to see a periodontist - not just for the look of your gums, but for your overall health. The health of your gums is a huge factor in your overall health.

I had the same problem. My dentist referred me to a periodontist. He perscribed a mouthwash to use twice a day. That along with flossing daily really helped.

I agree its very important to see a periodontist --this type of specialist is an expert in gums and gingival tissue. They can help treat your dark or discolored gums and also assess the health of your gums... most dentists don't treat dark gums...

Because I am african american I had a similar problem of excess melanin in my gum tissue. I looked extensively for someone that specializes in treating pigmented, dark gums... I wrote about this in another post but to summarize -- I had my gums treated by Dr Farnoosh in Los Angeles, California. The procedure is called "gum bleaching" its something you might want to look into...

This really helped me feel more comfortable smiling... Dr. Farnoosh basically invented this procedure that changes your gums from dark or discolored to healthy pink. I was amazed when I heard that this was possible. When I talked to my dentist before travelling to Los Angeles, my dentist said that Dr. Farnoosh is famous for this procedure so I should go to him. I travelled to LA and I liked the Doctor a lot he was very compassionate and the procedure was not very uncomfortable.

His website is below -- do your research and good luck. You will be amazed by how changing the color of your gums will make you more confident -- I was and am very happy with the results...

Brushing your teeth more regularly will lighten, 'pinken' your gums. Do NOT try to scrape it off. It is a pigmentation issue, not a surface issue. Brushing them at night is most important but also in the morning and perhaps after lunch. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Is it fairly expensive? His name is all over the place on this topic.
