Unbelievable... Sad, iTunes sucks but yes I'm a computer repair specialist and I've seen this happen a few times in the past couple months.

Answer (Windows 7 only, not Tested on Vista or XP):

    1. Uninstall iTunes from Windows. (You can leave your Local iTunes folder, the one with all of your music encoded in iTunes garbley gook).

    2. Now all you Desktop/Start Menu Icons are standard blank Windows icons that cannot resolve, but at least the iTunes scourge is gone.

    3. Registry Repair time - Easiest way is to click the windows button (bottom left) and in the search box search for "restore". You will see an option called "Restore Windows to an Earlier Time". These are basically pre-saved Registry and driver states.

    4. Select the Restore to an earlier time option and pick a restore point that was created BEFORE the iTunes problem occurred but that is closest to the present time. Restore to that point.

    5. Reboot, Windows Icons are back! If not then restore to an earlier point and reboot until your icons reappear. Note (Your personal files are not affected by system restore but any windows updates and driver updates ARE rolled back so you may need to re-run Windows Update and check for updates to Big programs or Drivers you know may need updating.)

    6. Once the iTunes Scourge is removed and Windows is fully updated and all drivers are good again CREATE A NEW RESTORE POINT, in-case you foolishly choose to reinstall iTunes and it burns you again. For now it seems as if you MUST have iTunes download a version that is a few back from the newest one. Older iTunes don't seem to cause this problem, but once you update iTunes it may burn you once again, your call.

    Hope this helps!
