Your best bet is to visit your local library, a local or county historical museum, or the county clerk's office (or all three) where there may be records of the address in question as to unusual occurrences.
This short article "How to Find Out If Anything Happened in Your House Before You Moved In"
Offers 5 steps and a few resources to find out if anything bad has happened at an address. Though it mentions CA law the information is useful in any state. I really hope you find it helpful!

And if you don't weant to click on the link a few things it suggests are talk to the neighbors, I'd suggest asking the current owners as well, ask the police for call-out records( times they were called to the home), search online and in person data bases of local TV and newspaper archives, ask the real estate agent ( depending on the state they may be required to disclose information), check city hall or deeds office at the county courthouse for ownership and lien information.
Were any of these answers useful?
I got this link and message in email 4/17 but I don't see any other responses "liangyunhao has just answered a question you have subscribed to entitled "House History" in the Architecture topic of Ask Me Help Desk."
