    The term resident anything usually refers to someone who works for the company not independently.

    So for example, GE might have several resident architects on staff to handle facilities issues.

    In general residencies provide you with the opportunity to explore your practice, ideas, design etc whilst working for and with an established company, In return you assist with any aspect that is required... if it is a university for example you would be teaching or carrying out demonstrations to students in return for the use of the universities/companies facilities.
