    Runny nose in older adults
    WHAT CAUSES runny noses in elders while we are eating--It is annoying and embarrassing... What can we do? Thanks, GeriL

    This is called gustatory rhinitis/rhinorrhea, runny nose when eating. It usually isn't an allergy, and there's a probable biological reason for it, but just be assured it happens to a lot of people, and not just us old folks. Spicy and piping hot foods/drinks can get your nose going. (My mom's trigger is ice cream -- go figure!) The easiest solution is to have a tissue box or at least a tissue handy.

    Of course, if this becomes frequent and very annoying, check with your doctor to make sure there isn't an underlying physical problem, such as a food allergy or a sinus infection.
