    Training for 5K
I've reluctantly agreed to do a 5K one month from today- I'm overweight (5' 5" and 170lbs:( ) and very out of shape so I need to start training. Any suggestions on how to start? Currently the only exercise I get outside of normal daily activities of caring for a home and 2 small children is walking approximately 1-2 miles two times per week.

No rocket science there: Run every other day starting now... adding a bit each time - to work yourself up to the 5k - and run 5k several times before the event.

Of course this is not advice on how to win it... but should get you to at least be able to finish it with your chin high.

Rick's advice is spot on. You need to get out there and do it, working your distance a little bit more each time.

But I would first pay a visit to a good sports shoe outlet and get a decent pair of running shoes. Also get a water bottle belt or similar to carry water with you.
