    A poem for Valentine's Day.
So I am blowing off the old dust and trying to get the juices flowing to write a romantic poem for my sweetie for Valentine's Day. I want to express all the reasons I love him and let him know all the hidden emotions I have been withholding. Yet I keep getting stuck. I have written down all the things I love about him just to help me along and I just keep rambling to no avail. Anyone have any helpful hints?

    Write a couplet? (sp?)
Make the ending rhym, that's the easiest.
Or look at some other poems and get ideas. :)

Rhyming is easy, rhyming words at the end of a sentence that makes sense is imo a little harder. Like if you ended one sentence with orange... doh! Anyway, what I do when I write is I get my paper and pen, throw on the sappiest music (loud) and sing along. I write down the sentences that come to mind, and if it sounds good I try and add the next etc etc. If it doesn't work, or it's not doing what you want, I just scratch it (unless I'm saving it for another poem later) and start over till I get what I want.

    My 2 cents though :)

Thanks everyone for your time & advice. I did end up with a fairly good poem. Hopefully it will spark some emotion & let him know he's appreciated & loved.

Your idea reminds me of Franklin McCormick, a DJ years ago on a Chicago all-night radio station, who read love poetry with his amazing voice -- "I love you because of who you are--and who I am when I am with you.''

Oo... that was "not only for WHAT you are, but for WHAT you are making in me."

Sorry about that - but you can't edit greenies! :)

About the poem - to the OP: I'm sooo glad you wrote a beautiful poem!

When I sit down to write I love to simply let my soul pour out through my fingers... I don't know how it happens, but I always end up with a beautiful verse - sometimes, its just for me... sometimes it turns out being for someone I didn't think it was for.. . others its for just the person it was intended for. :)

(Did that all make sense? It made sense in my head :) )

    HC -- I found it --

"I love you" by Roy Croft:

I love you, not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you, not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you, for the part of me that you bring out. I love you, for putting your hand into my heaped-up heart, and passing over all the foolish, weak things that you can't help dimly seeing there, and for drawing out, into the light, all the beautiful belongings that no one else had looked quite far enough to find. I love you, because you have done more than any creed could have done to make me good, and more than any fate could have done to make me happy. You have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign. You have done it by being yourself.
