Duncan Fyfe
It's probably a telephone table. We had something similar when I was a kid.
Thank You
The shelves were to hold phone books, the drawer for paper and pens/pencils, and the top, of course, for the rotary telephone. The table has a decorative wooden barrier to keep the phone from falling off the tabletop. The wood is probably mahogany.
Btw, his last name was Phyfe.

Don't think that's a Phyfe. He typically had curved, splayed legs with brass caps on the legs. Yes, it is a telephone table. Search his name for samples. I have a double dropleaf table in the DP style.

Here's a description of DP legs:
Hand-Carved Legs
Phyfe mostly designed tables that stood on single or double pedestals of three to four carved legs ending in animal-type feet with three to four toes. Table legs might be lightly curved out or splayed, with reed carvings that run up the leg, acanthus leaves or other carved elements.
