Little green computer no longer in tray
I have a dial-up connection and after I had to re-install the modem the little green computer disappeared from the tray by the clock. Is there a way to put it back or get it back? Have Win98SE, and can't boot into safe mode only into dos. Thanks for your detailed help.

Double-click the My Computer icon on your Windows Desktop.
Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon to open it up.
Find your dial-up connection in that window and click on it once to highlight it.
In the top menu click on Connections then Settings.
Make sure there is a checkmark in the box "Show an icon on taskbar after connected."

Let me know if that works.

The box already had a checkmark in it. Any other ideas?

Just wondering - why did you mention that you "can't boot inot safe mode, only dos"? Can you boot Windows successfully? Do you make a dial-up connection successfully?

    Hi,
Here is something else to check on:

    Open My Computer.
    Open DialUp Networking.
Then, Right click on your dial up icon or name.
    Then, Left click on Properties.
Look toward the bottom, and click on Configure button for your modem.
    Click on the Options tab.
Then, at the bottom, put a checkmark by "Display Modem Status".
Don't know if this will solve the issue, but worth a try looking at it.
    Best of luck,
    fredg

I mentioned that when I re-start the computer have tried to hold F8 key and others to get computer to go into safe mode but don't know if it's because this is a compaq deskpro or what but safe mode doesn't happen on this computer. Can re-start in dos but not safe mode. My computer boots normally and yes my dial-up connection works (slow but works). Just mentioned the boot in case it had something to do w/the little green computer in the tray going missing. Thanks for the help.

    Two things to try:
    1. If you are using a dial program provided by your ISP, call them. Sometimes these programs will override other settings. If you have installed one but don't actually use it, it can still cause problems.
    2. Uncheck the show icon box. Reboot. Then check the show icon box again. Reboot.
    Good luck.

Earthlink is my ISP and when you call for help the calls get routed to India-most of the people who help are OK but very hard to understand at times. Since the computer is OK without the little green computer in the tray I'll just leave well enough alone for now. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Hello again,
Here is something to try, might not be the problem though:

Right click anywhere on the system tray, near the clock, on a gray area.
    Then, left click on Properties.
    Taskbar Options should show.
Look to see if you have the following checked:

    Always on top
    Show clock

Those two should be the only ones with a checkmark.
    Best of luck,
    fredg
