I will soon be getting my wisdom teeth removed and I am assuming that they will put me fully under. I have never experienced this before and with the new movie out (Awake - where the man is mentally awake during his entire surgery and can feel all the pain) I am just a little curious I guess as to what it feels like when you start to go under, what it feels like when you are under, what it feels like when you come out of it, etc? Any response would be great!!

You'll only be put fully under if you ask to be, otherwise you can be mildly sedated and remain awake for the entire procedure.

I was knocked out when I had mine removed; three of my four were impacted, so I thought it would be easier. The way my doctor's office did it was to administer the drugs via an IV; they put the IV into my arm, pushed the drugs, and instantly I started to feel sleepy. They asked me to count backwards from 10 and I think I got to 8 before I was totally out. It was just like falling asleep for me, no pain, no fuss. While I was under I felt nothing, heard nothing. The next thing I remembered was waking up in a recovery room with a blanket over me and my husband staring at me. I felt tired, a little hungover, but well enough to walk on my own. I was a little disoriented, maybe the way you feel after a few beers. It felt like no time at all had passed.

All in all it was a very simple procedure that went very smoothly. If you trust your doctor you have nothing to worry about! Make sure you do all of your aftercare though, you don't want to end up with a dry socket or an infection!

I got all 4 of mine removed about a year ago and they put me fully under. Everything went fine until after it was all over and they sent me home. I have jaw problems and that night my jaw muscles started spasming and forcing my mouth open and closed like as if I was shivering. Then my jaw locked up and I couldn't open my mouth. It turned into a nightmare because of my jaw problem. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mean to scare you. That can't happen to you if you don't have the condition I have.
Just remember to keep your mouth very clean, and stretch you jaw muscles lots afterwords. It helps with the healing.

Is it your normal dentist taking your teeth out? If it is, you probably won't be put under. You will probably be given oral sedation which helps you relax. If you were referred to a specialist (oral surgeon), I would think he/she would have discussed your options for sedation. Don't let them put you under unless they have done a thorough medical assessment on you.

I had my wisdom teeth removed under general anaesthetic years ago. The only thing I can remember is how sick I was after, not from the surgery but from the medications they gave me to relax (which I didn't need but was hospital protocol) before the surgery. Times flies when you're under and the surgery is over in no time at all.

As mjl says keep your mouth super clean even before your surgery as this will help speed up healing.

Follow your post op instructions carefully.

Yep, I agree with everybody. Please take the advise that mjl gave... this happened to me too. Now, every time I go to chew meat, my jaw pops really loud.. and it hurts. Aain, not trying to scare you, but you should know what could happen if you don' t properly care for it after the surgery.
BTW... I was knocked out! It was the best sleep I had in a long time :)
