Internet Won't Work, Might Be A Virus
Hello Experts, Well here is the thing. I think I got a virus that did some damage to my computer settings, basically every time I try to connect to the internet it will say page not found. Also any program that tries to access the internet cannot connect at all. The weird thing is I can ping any site and the ping works fine, its whenever anything else tries to connect to the internet, by the way I'm on a LAN and I'm using Broadband. My question is, is there anywhere I can poke around in the registry to see if a setting was changed so that the computer thinks it has no connection to the net? Also I can browse my network fine, but as soon as I open IE says PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED, or for instance if Norton tries to update itself if just says that there is no connection. BUT I CAN PING ANYONE I WANT FROM A DOS PROMP! This is so frustrating, replay if you have any idea what it might be. I'm running Windows XP SP1 Professional.

Have you gone through your internet connections to make sure they are set properly? That would be the best place to start before going to the registry.

Also have you tried an FTP site to see if it is just the HTTP port blocked?

If you are not sure about the settings - did you try contacting your ISP & let them walk you through it (without letting them know about the pingin - that will come a bit later). Also do you use Outlook to check your mail - does that work?

I tried connecting to an FTP and it said No Socket! And when I try to run a port scan on the comp it says no sockets. I think it might have something to do with windows winsocks stuff, do you know you to reinstall winsocks? On windows xp?

    Thank You

When you go to your CMD Prompt and enter:
    ipconfig /renew

What happens? When did this start - I mean did you uninstall something? Did you have McAfee Personal Firewall or another Firewall on there?

    Sup man.

If you can PING just fine, but your browser won't work, then it's a problem with your DNS settings.

Go into network settings and disable the network device, then re-enable. The go into the command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns and after that type ipsonfig release and then right click on the network device and click repair.

I too had the problem with a virus attack... messed my computer all up. I was able to get into my email.. I would end up in a anti virus program... (not a anti virus program) or a porn site if I tried to get on the net. Finally, I went into task manager and stopped process on the virus that was called Isyssftav.eve that was running... what a nightmare to say the least. That was a job in itself. My computer kept having firewalls going up... telling me that I couldn't get into that file because it was infected. I also installed many different anti virus programs from another computer and they would say there wasn't any thing in my computer. I uninstalled my anti virus programs and reinstalled kaspersky.. and have to say.. it is working... yeah for that software :D but I still couldn't get on the internet so went into C:program files/Internet Exporer/Connection Wizard/run inetwiz.exe/select Connect using Lan if you are a local area network, Check Auto discovery of proxy server, and uncheck manual proxy server if it is checked... if your email is set up already on outlook then just skip. And hopefully that will help you and anyone else that gets this virus attack... took me a couple of weeks and fruitless attempts with my server to figure all of it out... I have been doing a lot of scans on my computer and still finding attempts to get back into my computer.. so keep scanning... on start up and before shut downs. Why people are so mean to do this is beyond me... anyhow... good luck!
