ITIN Rejected. No Accurate Data on the ITIN Status from IRS
    Hi!

I'm originally from Ukraine and got married to an American in 2008.

When filing our tax return as married filing jointly my husband and I submitted a W-7 form with a copy of my passport to get an ITIN.

6 weeks later we got a letter from IRS saying that we did not provide sufficient proof of identity (the copy of my passport was notarized by a Ukrainian notary since that's where I am now) and we 45 days to submit another copy.

So I had to go to the American Embassy and notarize a copy of my passport there by an American notary.

My husband sent in before the 45 day limit was over with registered mail and got a receipt back saying that somebody did get it at IRS.

6 weeks later I got a letter saying that my ITIN was rejected since I never got back with them. But I DID!

People on the phone at IRS know nothing...

Is there a way to find the copy that I sent and get my ITIN?

    Any help is highly appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Anna

    Anna:

More than likely, you will have to re-submit all of the documents once again to the IRS. In other words, start over.

This time, however, the U.S. Embassy will NOT certify your documents. You will need to use a Ukrainian notary and also get an apostille from the Ukrainian government agency which issued your passport.
