The Night before my uncle died there came this loud and heavy knock to my window and when we looked out we could not see anything. My Granny believes that it was a sign and we then believed it when we heard about my uncle. There is a fairy called a wichtleins that sends 3 knocks to a person to warn them of someone dying. I strongly believe this. Now my Other Granny is dying from cancer and for the last 2 nights I have heard 3 quiet knocks. Some people believe that this means that someone is going to die in your family but not soon. I really want people to answer this. I want to know if this is true about the quiet knocks. Or if this is true about the wichtleins.

I couldn't find anything in books I have nearby mentioning witchleins. When I find them the spelling will probably be different. How did you hear of them?

Sounds like your Irish Gran is pretty wise about these things. Since this is something within your cultural heritage, your best bet is to stay in that millieu. Grandmothers can be great sources of info. Ask her if there is anything to be done, but there may not be. If it is given to your family to know when death is near, that is the gift you are given. It is an important gift, but one that can be heavy to bear.

Knocking is a death omen according to some sources, and yes, it is usually three knocks. One of the earliest accounts was in1696 of a woman who's father died about 3 days after hearing the three knocks on his bed headboard. To quote from an 1787 edition of a book on superstition, "Three loud and distinct knocks on the bed head of a sick person... is an Omen of his death." Celtic folklore and the Irish pagan belief system of Witta (similar to Wiccan belief), also speak of this omen.

Is it true? Folklore often is rooted in a strong belief that is supported by actual occurrences, in other words, things that happen regularly enough for people to notice the commonality.
But belief isn't always factual. Fact or coincidence, it happens often enough to have been recorded for at least 300 years.
