What does the line "in spite of her tom knew where the wind lay" mean in the book tom sawyer

Tom knows Aunt Polly very well. He knows that Aunt Polly is subjecting him to some close questioning in the hope of trapping him. Knowing 'where the wind lay' probably means that Tom knows where the conversation is leading. He will head her off because he is one step ahead of her.
