    Famine distended belly?
HI I have a question, Google-ing for hours, no luck. When was was a kid my family was very poor. Malnutrition struck. Because of that I have big belly. Now I can afford a treatment. I don't know where to start, what kind of specialist to see. Here in America there are hardly any doctors to deal with famine problem. Couple of places I tried give me attitude like "if not broken why fix it". I'm in fine health. Only abnormality I can think of is that it has been more than 15 years, my weight is always between 65-75 kgs. Please tell me whom to see. I don't think it's a weight problem. Appreciate very much __AD

You can't really call your condition of swollen belly 'famine oriented'. That was too long ago to have any impact on it now. There are several reasons for a swollen belly:

    Air swallowing (a nervous habit)
    Irritable bowel syndrome
    Lactose intolerance
    Ovarian cyst
    Overeating
    Partial bowel obstruction
    Uterine fibroids

You haven't stated if you are male or female so some of my symptoms are female related.

The doctors you see may not see how they can treat, or even diagnose an underlying cause and offer a solution. You may be giving them a little too much information about your childhood as you are an adult now.

You have to see a regular doctor in order to be referred to a specialist that the doctor thinks can diagnose your condition, but to be quite truthful, some people always carry this 'pear shape' around with them for life.

I do agree with the doctor you saw that stated 'if not broken why try to fix it'; if you are healthy now, why invite problems ?

What are your present medical conditions by the way? What type of meds are you taking ?
