    Herkie or Hurdler?
What is the difference between a herkie and a front hurdler?

The Front Hurdler jump is almost identical to the Herkie jump with the exception of your front leg. In a Front Hurdler your front(straight) leg is right in front of your face and your bent leg has the knee pointing down to the ground. There are right and left Front Hurdlers. In a right Front Hurdler the right leg is the straight leg and the opposite is true for a left Front Hurdler.

A Herkie: A cheerleading jump where one leg (usually your weakest) is bent towards the ground and your other leg (usually your strongest) is out to the side as high as it will go in the toe touch position. This jump is very similar to the Side Hurdler except for the position of the bent leg. There are right Herkies and left Herkies. In a right Herkie your right leg is straight with your left leg bent and the opposite is true for a left Herkie. Sometimes called a hurkie. Named after Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer.

I've always wondered about that. Our squad doesn't do much jumps, so I never really needed to know. But after reading your definition, I still don't get it! Could you explain in one sentence?

Sorry, but I can't. I get too wordy.

Well, if I have to do it in one sentence I would try it this way...

Think of a jump with the front leg straight and the back leg bent -- for a hurdler, reach your chest out over your front leg thigh and for a herkie you sort of want to point the chest in between the legs.

Sound OK to the rest of you out there?

A hurdler is like the side splits in the air with one leg in the front and one leg bent back. It is done in track when you see those runners jumping over hurdlers.

A herkie is kind of like doing a toetouch except one leg is bent at waistlength and facing forward instead of downward. That's the best that I can explain it.

    Front Hurdler

Bring front leg up and straight out from body, knee up towards chest, toe pointed out, head and shoulders forward
Other leg bent at knee, 90 degree angle, toe out and down

    Side Hurdler

Back leg - knee pointing to front
    Point toes
Arm straight up, fist on hip

    Herkie

Other leg bent, foot towards hip, knee down, arm straight up against head with fist
