I assume that the wiring in the wall consists of a blue/blue-white pair and an orange/orange-white pair (is that what you meant by "crazy and dashed?"). In most cases, but not all, the blue/blue-white pair is the first active line in the house. If you're handy with a volt-meter you can check it by looking for 48 volts DC on the pair. But if you don't have a voltmeter I would suggest that for a first attempt simply connect the red and green wires from the telephone set to the blue and blue-white pair, and see if you get dial tone (it shouldn't matter whether you connect red to blue and green to blue-white, or vice versa). If you get dial tone, then since this is a rotary phone it should work as expected. If you don't get dial tone then try connecting the red & green to the orange/orange-white pair.
