Roger, the answer is really dependent on which plumbing code your state follows.

In my State, Massachusetts, the maximum distance for a 2" trap to vent is 6 feet, and a maximum for 3" is 8 feet.

In other states, 2" max. distance from trap to vent is 8 feet and 3" maximum is 10 feet.

Check your local plumbing code online under venting requirements... should be easy to find using Google!
