Noise in pipes and refrigerator noise with water chugging out of drink mechanism
Originally, we heard a noise from the refrigerator once in a while, changed the filter which lessened the noise. Now we hear a chugging in the pipes in our bedroom ceiling, kitchen ceiling and in both bath rooms. It occurs occasionally. One night we shut off the hot water heater and it was quiet. Now shutting down the hot water does not stop the occasional chugging ( not sure how to describe the sound). We are concerned that something major is wrong with our water pipes. The sound in the bathroom is softer. It is louder in the kitchen and bedroom ceiling. At one point we were going to go in the attic to see if pipes were actually moving and hitting each other.
The water coming out of the refrigerator outside water dispenser has also chugged out on occasion. Not all the time. HELP PLEASE. My husband has been reading his home depot book but we have no solution and we know that calling a plumber is going to be a big cost.
Thanks to anyone that can give us some guidance... :D

Today there is a constant "rattling sound" in the ceiling with a few seconds break whether we are using any water or not... A traveling sound that fades and then starts again...
