Questioning whether someone's trying to defraud me.
I have had the same cell number for three years and very few people have my number - just my close inside circle of family and friends, who I've known for about 30 years plus.

In the past week I've received multiple calls from different people claiming to be an elderly mother and her adult children - two sons and a daughter. They started claiming that I had been calling the mother and they wanted to know why. They then started accusing me of calling the rest of them, and were demanding information from me like where I worked, who I am, where I live and so on. I gave them no information and just kept repeating "I've not called you, you are mistaken."

When they made about their 8th call I phoned my phone carrier and confirmed that I'd never made any calls to their area code at all, and had all the numbers from which they had called me blocked and filed a complaint. I also reported this situation to the police department, documenting the calls from them and providing a full record of my phone activity from the time I first got my phone number, as proof that I had never called these people, because they were trying to say that I was harassing them and they were threatening to sue me.

I'm wondering if this is a new scam - are people trying to get others to call them so they can claim harassment? It's so weird I can't figure out why the heck these people were bothering me.

    Hello don't:

I don't see ANY financial gain for doing what they did - NONE. It sounds just like some weird people.

That's what I thought too until they started trying to get more information from me, under the guise of "figuring it out". It seemed like a really inefficient way to attempt identity theft but there's no way that they had my phone number and name on the caller ID of four different family members who lived in different homes, as they claimed. Weird. Thanks for your feedback.

Whose knows, they should give up after getting no info or you not answering those area calls

Thanks Fr. Chuck - I blocked the numbers so they have no choice but to give up. I was just wondering if this was some new scam going around that other people have experienced - just a curiosity because it's hard to figure out what they were even trying to accomplish.
